The soft launch of Anne Field’s and Bob Hallett’s documentary on Moorefield racecourse last week had residents of St Patricks Green Retirement village reminiscing about the history of the Kogarah area. The documentary delves into the traditions of the racecourse and the role it played in the local community.

The village was honoured to have former jockeys Ray Selkrig OAM (1961 Melbourne Cup winner) and Ted Mills, who both rode in the last race meeting on 14 July 1951 at Moorefield, and Cliff Clare, who rode in races and barrier trials, in attendance for the first screening.

Anne interviewed a variety of people, all with interesting recollections about the glory days of Moorefield Racecourse with a story about a larrikin priest at the time who enjoyed getting down to the track striking a particular chord with St Patrick’s Green residents.

Anne who has served as a Councillor for both Kogarah and Rockdale Councils and has been involved in  preservation of the local history launched her book The History of Moorefield Racecourse (1988-1951) in 2016.
