A terrible start to the new year with a fire destroying a unit at Windsor Country Retirement Village.

An elderly resident in his 70's was lucky to escape a fire that destroyed his unit - thankfully his fire alarm sounded and he was able to evacuate before being severely injured.

Fire fighters arrived to the retirement village to find the unit well alight with large amounts of smoke present. Quick action by the crews managed to contain the fire before it got into the roof and ensured the fire did not spread to adjoining units.

A few residents were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure - however there were no serious injuries.

It seems good maintenance and good neighbours ensured tragedy was averted at the retirement village.
