The flood-stricken town of Eugowra, NSW, will have a merrier Christmas thanks to efforts by staff and residents at a Central Coast retirement village.
Justin Watson (pictured), Maintenance Supervisor at Living Choice Broadwater Court, gathered supplies and donations from Broadwater Court and the local community, and headed west with a full truck and his family to bring Eugowra some much-needed Christmas cheer – delivered straight to affected residents.
Only a few people are left in the town, which was all but wiped off the map last month by devastating flash floods; the remaining residents are living in caravans at the showgrounds, and Justin said they got the donations within 12 hours of his arrival.
“A girl aged around 11 years was excited to see the Christmas decorations, but she didn’t have a tree so in true small-town spirit a tree was donated from an organiser’s own lounge room. She was so excited and further thrilled to see a packet of biscuits.
Life has been tough, especially for children.
“Basic things were the most appreciated and this same girl asked for a face washer so she could wash her face,” he said.
According to Justin, the trip was a “successful mission” – and a humbling experience.
“We couldn’t help everyone, but I know we helped at least 20 families. The drive was long and exhausting with a little bit of engine light action occasionally, but apart from helping the flood victims, we also made some long-term family memories on the road trip,” he said.
