North Lakes Resort Golf Club announced this week it would close at the end of next year, due to continued financial losses with the course owner proposing to sell the land to retirement living and aged-care operator The Village Retirement Group (VRG).

General Manager Adam Simpson said that efforts to sell the land to another golf operator have been unsuccessful and the bulk of the course land was now set to become public open space.

VRG’s proposal which includes 200 low-rise independent living units and a three-storey 100-bed aged-care facility on two sites on the land, comprises 11 hectares with the majority of the course (57 hectares) being retained for public open space, environmental protection and the possibility of community sporting and recreational facilities in the future according to a club’s spokesperson.

Mr Simpson said the proposal ensured most residents with golf course views would retain green vistas and hoped that despite members being disappointed by the club’s closure that the preservation of public space would be welcomed by the local community.

The club will continue to trade at least until late 2019 with current memberships being honoured and facilities being maintained until the course closes.

Information on the proposed project will be presented at a series of community information sessions at the clubhouse.
