One of Australia’s top retirement village and aged care providers Anglicare has announced their proposal of developing a senior’s community in Milperra, a project Anglicare insists will help meet a need for suitable retirement accommodation in the Canterbury-Bankstown region of southwest Sydney.

As formulated by Anglicare, the proposed development is to be delivered in three stages with the first stage including both residential care and retirement living units, along with community facilities including a library, gym and bowling green. The second and third stages will build retirement living units.

The development is to be built on the back of Bankstown Golf Club and is situated to enable residents to age in place and have easy pedestrian access to local amenities and public transport.

In addition to this strategy, it is estimated that the total capital investment made through the development will be an approximately $100 million.

“There are many people over the age of 65 currently living in and around Milperra. However, there is little in the way of quality retirement living developments, residential aged care and community support services,” explains Grant Millard, Anglicare CEO.

“At the moment there are no residential aged care homes in Milperra, Panania, East Hills, Voyager Point and Picnic Point. In addition, according to the Department of Health, there is a shortfall of more than 1000 beds in the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA, which is expected to increase due to population growth.”

This observation shows there is a need for more co-locating of aged care services and independent living residences throughout the state. Mr Millard is confident Anglicare’s Milperra retirement village and aged care development, will help support the growth of the ageing-in-place concept.

“Most of Anglicare’s 22 retirement villages are currently co-located with aged care homes, while also providing a range of home care services to those living independently within the village. We believe that it is important to provide care and support services that meet the needs of residents, whatever they may be,” says Mr Millard.

“This provides great peace of mind and a sense of security for the future. For this reason, all of

Anglicare’s major village developments planned for the next 5 to 10 years include the provision of aged care services, as well as self-contained dwellings with the combined developments having intentional connectivity to the surrounding community.”

Mr Millard believes that the Milperra retirement living development will serve as a great asset to the ageing community, as there are only similar 4 locations offering retirement residences within 10km of the Milperra site.

“Anglicare has a great opportunity to meet the needs of people in the heart of Milperra. By creating suitable accommodation, wellbeing and care services for older people living in this area, we will provide the opportunity for them to remain in an area they already love and call home, rather than move to other areas to receive these services.”
