The Hume Country Estate Retirement Resort wants to build another 18 units on the former golf course in Albury, 550km from Sydney on the VIC border.

The $5.5 million plan would be the third stage of the project which was launched 10 years ago by local developer George Fendyk.

The site had been the area’s only golf club before it was shut down 12 years ago and the former clubhouse turned into the village’s community centre.

Mr Fendyk says the demand for retirement living options in big regional centres was “booming” and the developments were needed to allow more locals to stay in the area.

“In this regard the proposed development will provide an accommodation option which will allow residents of Albury and Wodonga to stay within the local area and continue to contribute to their long term social networks,” the application reads.

“The close proximity to the Albury Nursing Home also provides residents with another level of care which will contribute to the long term social benefit for this region.”
