Depending on the state or territory you live in, these can include:<\/p><ul><li><em><strong>Calling resident meetings to discuss matters that need your consent, or to discuss how the village is being managed and operated;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Reporting your decisions to the operator;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Applying to your state Civil and Administrative Tribunal on behalf of residents;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Asking the operator for information on changes to recurring charges;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Receiving financial accounts from the operator;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Proposing changes to village rules, facilities, or services;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Being a point of contact for new residents;<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Receiving the annual safety inspection report; and<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Proposing that annual account surpluses or excess capital works funds be distributed among the residents.<\/strong><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>Note that, if an issue requires residents\u2019 consent, the Residents Committee CANNOT make decisions on your behalf.<\/p><h2>How can I found or join a Residents Committee?<\/h2><figure id=\"attachment_1569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1569\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1569 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.villages.com.au/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/amy-hirschi-W7aXY5F2pBo-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Amy Hirschi\/Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><strong>To establish a Residents Committee in your village, a general meeting must be held, to which all residents are invited; at this meeting, more than 50% of residents need to approve the Committee.<\/strong><\/p><p>From there, you can decide how many members it should have and how often it should meet, then nominate and elect members.<\/p><p>Anyone can stand for election on a Residents Committee, and there\u2019s no limit on how large it should be \u2013 though it should at least have a chairperson, a secretary and a treasurer. It\u2019s also important to have a returning officer: someone who isn\u2019t a member of the committee or standing for election to the committee, who works with the operator to prepare for meetings and is responsible for running elections and counting the votes.<\/p><p>Remember that the village operator should provide your committee with administrative assistance, can\u2019t obstruct it from carrying out its functions, and should meet with the committee or a representative on request; the operator can also request meetings with the committee.<\/p><p><strong>If you want to make sure your voice is heard in your retirement village, then standing for the Residents Committee \u2013 or starting one, if there isn\u2019t one already \u2013 is a great way to do it.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you move into a retirement village, your interests as a resident may be represented to the village operator by a Residents Committee.
