On the final episode of The Best 30 Years tomorrow, we take a look at the more difficult questions around loss of independence and mortality, as well as the role of residential aged care.
While nobody relishes the idea of losing our independence, or confronting our own mortality, it’s important to have these discussions early – particularly if we plan to move into residential aged care, as it’s better to make our wishes known well in advance than to be forced to take what’s available following a crisis.
We spoke to several aged care residents, who – like Joyce from Southern Cross Care in Turramurra, NSW – said residential care is nothing to be afraid of.
“From my point of view, I think, what’s to worry about? The place is comfy, the staff are lovely. I would still love to go back and look after myself and do my own cooking and everything else – the trouble is, I can’t realise that I’m getting old.
“It takes a bit of time to acclimatise, but that’s alright – I’m very adaptable,” she said.
