Mary Bidmead at Wamberal Gardens, Wamberal

Mary: "Our daughter met an Australian while travelling here as a young girl and we visited from the UK three times. When babies started arriving, we decided to move here permanently."

"That was 1980. My husband and I had only five years here in Australia together before he passed away."

"I chose to come here to Wamberal Gardens 17 years ago when I was 69-years-old. I was persuaded to do so as I did not want to be trouble to my daughter. I had stayed on in our home at Terrigal for five years, but a friend of mine was here and she was very happy. I discovered that all the other residents here were happy too and very, very nice. I believe that living is all about great companionship. I keep active and very busy."

"This means that apart from village activities, I belong to two Probus clubs - I am the treasurer of one; play bowls once a week - I am the welfare officer of the club; paint; participate in the U3A - the University of the Third Age; and play cards and mahjong."

"I love my unit and I love the people here. They are still very friendly and supportive, just as they were 17 years ago."
